I Dare You

The sun peeked through the clouds, it's light golden light gloriously stretching down to the RippleClan camp below. The brook outside the camp's barrier shone a light blue and white, reflecting the sky and trees above it. Blackpaw lay restlessly in his nest, his dark tail flicking back and forth. Willowpaw and Reedpaw lay beside him, with Icepaw and Shiverpaw chatting in the back of the den.

The brambles of the apprentices den shook as a light breeze barged through, the brown tendrils dappled with dark green leaves shook violently, as if fretting like a kit does when a mother does not ween their milk to them. Blackpaw sat up straighter, his amber gaze scanning the lifeless camp before them.

"Were not going out training today...our mentors wanted time to rest," Willowpaw breathed, her gray ears dropping.

Reedpaw snorted from her position on the other side of Blackpaw. "Their just lazy. Why, when I'm a warrior, I'll never leave my apprentice a beautiful day without training." she growled, her tail smacking against them moss before it sprung back to it's position.

Blackpaw sighed. "Flameflick, Ambertail and Rosewing were tired after Flameclaw put them on the night patrol. You can't honestly say it's all their fault, you know," he told Reedpaw.

The gray she-cat's deep eyes brightened. "Hey! I've got an idea!" she mewed, her eyes flicking side ways to ensure that Shiverpaw and Icepaw didn't hear.

Willowpaw moved close to Blackpaw so she could hear. "What?" she asked, her pelt mixing in with Blackpaw's.

Reedpaw's lips formed a wide, sneaky grin. "How about we take ourselves out training? We'll show our mentors that we are far more better than they are at mentoring! And who knows; maybe Applestar might make us warriors!" Reedpaw's eyes were wide.

A stab of wonder hit Blackpaw. "Do....do you think we can pull it off?" he asked.

Willowpaw flicked him over the ear with her tail. "Of course, mousebrain! We're smart!" she purred.

Blackpaw felt both she-cats eyes on him. He was the last one to choose if they should do it or not. "Yeah. Yeah, okay. Let's do it," he agreed. Even though a small voice in the back of his head screamed no and that they'll get into so much trouble for doing it, he ignored it, and smiled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Okay...I dare Blackpaw to climb to the top of that tree!" Willowpaw grinned, her sharp white teeth gleaming in the sunlight.

Blackpaw gulped as he looked up a tall beech tree, the green leaves shimmering in the sunlight. "Aw, come on Willowpaw! You always give out the scariest dares!" he growled. Willowpaw still had that dumb grin on her face, her head going back to fully see the hight of the tree.

"Come on, Blackpaw! Or are you a frightened mouse?" Reedpaw teased, her pelt glimmering in the sunlight.

The three apprentices had completely abandoned their idea to go out training by themselves, now playing dares on each other. Reedpaw had to toss a stone at a bird, Willowpaw had to roll down a small hill, and now Blackpaw had to climb the tall tree.

Hooking his claws into the rough bark, he hauled himself up to the lowest branch, shaking. The leaves rustled as the branch creaked. Blackpaw stuck his tongue out a Reedpaw, who was mimicking his shaking frame. Gripping his paws around the next highest branch, he hauled himself up further. The sunlight hit his eyes, making him narrow them to block it out.

After many hauls up the branches and trunk of the tree, he finally found himself at the top, standing on his hind legs while placing his front paws at the tip of the tree. Looking down at the amazed Reedpaw and Willowpaw, he grinned at their defeat.

"Ha! Told you I could do it!" he hissed playfully, watching their amazed looks turn into a playfully challenge.

"Oh yeah? Well, come down here so that you can give Reedpaw her dare!" Willowpaw called, her voice faintly rustling the leaves.

Blackpaw gulped again as he looked down the tree, before taking his forepaws off of the tip of the tree. The way down was way more scarier than the trip up. Suddenly, his forepaws lost grip, slipping away from the bark. His chest slammed into the branch, his tail smacking against his face. Blackpaw clung onto the branch with his paws, his claws digging into the bark. Cracks and creaking noise flooded into his ear as the branch suddenly snapped.

Blackpaw leaped from the falling branch, and to the trunk of the tree. His claws easily found their grip, and he was safe. His heart was beating rapidly. Then he remembered the falling branch, which was falling straight down to Willowpaw and Reedpaw!

"Guys! Look out!" he called out. But it was too late as a shriek sliced through the air, followed by muffled silence after the branch fell to the ground.

"Reedpaw!" Willowpaw cried in agony and despair. Blackpaw's eyes nearly shot from his head. Quickly, the apprentice climbed down the tree, and his paws landed to the grass with a soft thud. Blackpaw bounded to the horrified Willowpaw.

Blood leaked from beneath the fallen cedar branch, and only Reedpaw's tail-tip could be seen.

"She's.....dead..."

Sorry, Holly Lives On. But you were inactive, so I killed off Reedpaw. If you remain inactive, I'll kill Flameflick too. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Willowpaw's eyes widened, her face grim. "I shouldn't have dared you, we shouldn't have left."

Blackpaw felt grief strike him like lightning. "It's not your fault; it's mine. I shouldn't have climbed the tree in the first place," he whimpered. 'All my fault....' he thought.

Dovesong groomed her fur until it was sleek. She stood up, and padded to Applestar. "Hey."

Icepaw cuffed Shiverpaw playfully over her ears. He had grown a bond for her. He smiled, but it faded when he saw that the other apprentices were gone. "Where are they?!"

Applestar dipped her head. "Hello, Dovesong. Have you seen Reedpaw, Blackpaw, and Willowpaw anywhere, I can't find them," she meowed. She was going frantic!

Shiverpaw shrugged. "They probably snuck out. We're too boring for them." She teased, not knowing her denmate had joined StarClan.

Willowpaw nudged him lightly. "It's our fault. We shouldn't have left. Now let's bring her back to camp." She tried her best to sound calm but her voice quavered.

Blackpaw sighed. He grabbed Reedpaw's scruff in his mouth, and begun to drag her towards camp. No matter how sad, how depressed, how guilty he felt, he was glad to have Willowpaw by his side.

Willowpaw helped bring Reedpaw's body back to camp. "We need to find Applestar." She meowed.

"No I have not.." Dovesong shook her head. "Where could they be? Should I check the forest?" she offered.
~Dovesong

Icepaw shrugged. "Or we are too cool for them!" he teased back.

Blackpaw nodded before bounding into the leaders den. Luckily, the leader was in there. "A-Applestar.....Reedpaw is dead," he mewed, coming out with his news.

Applestar lifted her head, but stared in shock at what she just heard. "What happened? Where were you? Bring Willowpaw here. Now." she snarled, her kind nature leaving.

Dovesong's ears pressed to the back of her head. Her eyes wide with horror. "What? Reedpaw cannot be dead!"

Icepaw flicked his tail over to the leaders den. "Their they are!"

Blackpaw fought back a snarl. "She....she was crushed by a branch..." he whispered, looking from Dovesong to Applestar.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

"The branch just fell off of a tree?!" she asked with disbelief. It would need force to fall off....
~DOvesong

Applefeather said...

"No....not exactly...." he mewed, his paws shuffling.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

"Well, what happened Blackpaw?" Dovesong pressed.

"Willowpaw dared me to go in the tree! I wasn't going to be called a frightened mouse!" he yelled.

All throughout this, Applestar remained silent and calm.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

Dovesong twitched her whiskers. "BEing called a frightened mouse would be better than Reedpaw dead," she murmured to her leader. She was suprised how calm she was. Am I saying to much?

"How was I supposed to know that she was going to die? I'm so sorry that I can't tell the future!" he snarled at Dovesong.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

Dovesong nodded, and felt bad about how she was acting - like a leader! "Blackpaw, I am so sorry for being hard on you." Dovesong looked into the distance. Am I going to lose my respect in RippleClan?!?!
~Dovesong

Applestar rose to her paws. "Dovesong, you did well. Blackpaw, on the other hand, bring Reedpaw's body. You and Willowpaw will receive your punishment's in a moment." she mewed, her gaze drifting from Blackpaw to Dovesong.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

Dovesong felt her ears grow warm with embarassment as her leader praised her. "Should I leave, or stay?" Dovesong asked APplestar.
~Dovesong

Applefeather said...

"Stay, please. You might be of use," Applestar mewed, waiting for Blackpaw to return.

Blackpaw came through the waterfall, him and Willowpaw dragging along Reedpaw's body.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

Dovesong couldn't help herself from nudging Reedpaw. Her eyes dropped, she really was dead. She turned and went back to Applestar, and wrapped her tail neatly around her paws.

Applefeather said...

"I'm really sorry...." Blackpaw meowed. He knew Dovesong and Applestar will be outraged.

Applestar waited for Dovesong to reply. She was still testing her.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

Dovesong stood up. "I know that you are, Blackpaw. Not everything can be controlled," she meowed calmly and touched her nose to his shoulder. She looked at him, an expression that said, 'I understand.'
~Dovesong

Applefeather said...

"Thank you.." he meowed.

Amber{Sharpstone} said...

"Applestar, I don't think that they deserve a punishment. THis death was enough." Dovesong turned to her leader.

Brooke said...

Embersky had been silently listening to Dovesong and Applestar debate among themselves on proper punishment and decided she should join in.
I'm not a deputy or head warrior, She thought, flexing her silvery claws. But I have a say, don't I?
"Of course they deserve punishment." She interrupted, her voice smooth but with a hint of annoyance. "They lurked out of camp without permission, and in their 'fun' an apprentice was killed. They've only just begun to learn that every decision they make can effect the whole Clan. There's still a lot more to earn. I think that, as their punishment, they shouldn't go to the next gathering." She sat down and dipped her head for the others to speak.

Applefeather said...

Applestar breathed deeply. "Embersky, though it is not your place to speak, neither is it Dovesong's, right? Both of you make valid points; Dovesong is right; this death is a lot to suffer already. However," Applestar continued when Embersky bowed her head in submission.
"Embersky is even more right. Though death is a lot to process and we do learn from it, that doesn't sweeten the fact that Reedpaw is dead. Blackpaw and Willowpaw disobeyed their mentors, and they disobeyed me and RippleClan. Reedpaw didn't want to die." she mewed, her speech boring onto her mind.
Every cat seemed quiet.

Brooke said...

After a few heartbeats of silence that seemed to last forever, Embersky dipped her head. Her cream fur turned ginger as shadows casted over her pelt.
"Thank you for your consideration, Applestar." She meowed, stepping back. "I suppose you're right in saying that it isn't my place. In the end, it is your decision that counts. I'm sure you will find the best one."

Applefeather said...

Applestar smiled. "Your prosper is correct. They will miss the next gathering," Applestar mewed, her gaze drawing to Blackpaw. "Embersky, thank you. This is why your one of my most trusted warriors," she mewed, dipping her head in deep respect to Embersky. The dappled leader stood up, nodding to each cat in her den.
"Dovesong, Blackpaw, you may leave." she mewed, flicking her tail. Blackpaw and Dovesong dipped their heads, padding out of the leaders den.
"But....Embersky, I need to speak with you." Applestar mewed.

Brooke said...

Embersky's breaths slowed and she blinked. It seemed as if the darkness of the air crept deeper into her now. As a slight wind blowed, it sent a shiver up her spine.
Is she going to talk about my dream? She wondered, her paws itching with fear. Or maybe something else. I don't know. I'll just talk to her. She shook her head as if to rid herself of the thoughts and then gave a small nod.
"What would you like to speak to me about, Applestar?" She asked politely, the fear faded from her voice.

Applefeather said...

Applestar looked at the starry expanse that was StarClan from the dark lines from the brambles. A prickle of fear washed through her, before she turned to Embersky. "Cinderpool says that you have had a dream about a 'clan' named 'MountainClan'. Is this true?" she asked, her voice low in case a warrior might be listening.

Brooke said...

Embersky's heart sank and fear rose. She was right. This was what her leader wanted to talk about. She opened her mouth to speak, but found herself standing wordless. For a few heartbeats there was pure silence, and then she forced strength into her blood to reply. "Yes," She breathed, her eyes dark slits. "She spoke the truth. It was horrible. It wasn't even like a dream. For the longest time I couldn't even wake up. I just saw their shadows along the floor and stared in panic. What does it mean?"

Applefeather said...

Applestar sighed, her body slightly shaking. "I-I'm not sure..." she sighed, her gaze drifting to the dark wall of her den.
